Bob Marley with Brazuca

Acrylic on Canvas

Bob Marley, the Jamaican reggae star, is playing one of his favorite games that he played almost everyday, even while on tour. Along with his musical talent, he was considered a professional-level football player. He considered Pele (who I also have a portrait of in this gallery) one of his favorite players. The background of this painting has the Jamaican flag, along with an white outline of the island. These were his proud roots that he represented during his lifetime. On a personal level, this is something I can appreciate along with my own Jamaican background. Like many musical legends, he was not given a long lifespan, but he made a powerful impact during his short lifetime. The ball in this painting is the Brazuca that was recently used at the 2014 World Cup. The idea for using this ball came from the concept of reuniting someone from history with something loved, in the present. This is a quote from Bob Marley about football: “Football is a whole skill to itself. A whole world. A whole universe to itself. Me love it because you have to be skillful to play it! Freedom! Football is freedom.” (Bob Marley- 1979)” This is the essence I want to capture in this painting and bring to the attention of the viewer.
